After working with Microsoft UK, he returned to India in 2015. During his days in the UK, Abhinav was having a wonderful time partying and exploring beautiful Europe, but he felt something was missing from his life. According to him, “I used to travel across Europe and party on the weekends. It was quite like a dream but even though I felt happy I never felt accomplished”. After returning to India, Abhinav continued with Microsoft in Gurgaon for a few months. During his time in Gurgaon, he realised his next passion.

Abhinav Singh Success Story, How it started

Abhinav hails from an agricultural background, and he realised he had a passion for agriculture. He visited his family in Varanasi, and along with it, he started researching about agriculture. After a thorough research, he took agriculture as his new profession.

Abhinav’s ancestors were into agriculture. However, his father did not choose agriculture as his profession but had acres of ancestral land in his native village, Chilbila, Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh. Abhinav made use of this advantage and tried his luck in organic farming, a sector that is also booming thanks to the increasing awareness in the country.

Though organic farming had potential, things did not work out for Abhinav, and he had to drop the idea. After dropping organic farming as a career option, he started researching about a more viable business opportunity, and he discovered the idea of gerbera farming.

The Flourishing Flower Business

During his research, Abhinav learned that gerbera is a perennial plant that requires a cool climate, so setting up a polyhouse was essential. For your information, a polyhouse is a type of greenhouse where the climate can be controlled according to the need of the plant. The polyhouse is covered by a specialized polythene sheet, and the structure is made from galvanized iron.

After this research, Abhinav set up a 4000 sqft polyhouse unit on an acre. He invested Rs 58 lakh, of which he received a government subsidy of Rs 29 lakh, a flat 50%. Abhinav managed the rest of the investment through loans and savings.

During his market research, he learned that the demand for this flower was high, especially in Uttar Pradesh, during the wedding season, but there was no local cultivation, and they had to be brought from Pune and Bengaluru. He identified that there was a gap in the production and logistics and gave it a try.

After the hurdles, Abhinav finally planted the first batch of gerberas in October 2020 in his facility on an acre. After three months, in February 2021, he harvested the first batch and sold them. After this, he never had to look back, and the whole business is flourishing.

Today, he sells almost 2000 flowers a day. Each flower sells at Rs. 4 on average. As per Abhinav, the flowers are sold in bundles, and one bundle contains a total of 10 flowers. The prices of the bundle fluctuate according to the demand in the market. The prices vary from Rs. 30 to Rs. 110. The prices peak during the wedding season.

Through his hard work, Abhinav earns Rs 1.5 lakh monthly or Rs. 18 lakh annually through gerberas. Abhinav is currently cultivating seven different colours of the gerbera flower. The colours at his farm include red, yellow, magenta, pink, Valentine pink, orange, and white.

According to Abhinav, the quality of flowers produced from his farm is at par with the ones produced in Bangalore and Pune, which are considered to be the best in the country. He markets his flowers from Varanasi, and from there on, the flowers are transported to several places like Delhi, Pune, and Bengaluru. Apart from the demand, in different parts of the country, the flowers are also transported within several districts of the state, like Azamgarh, Ghazipur, Jaunpur, and Chandauli.
