The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R Flex Fuel was unveiled at the Auto Expo 2023, India and was one of the highlights of Maruti Suzuki’s range that was showcased. However, before the Auto Expo, Maruti had

earlier showcased it at the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers Technology (SIAM) in December 2022. Maruti Suzuki is going to manufacture it indigenously and locally. This Flex-fuel engine will be designed to run on a 20% to 85% blended ethanol engine.

It will be operated with the current 1.2 litre Naturally Aspirated petrol engine. However, for ethanol, large-scale changes will be made to the engine, due to which it will be able to provide better power on ethanol mixed fuel. This engine will also be prepared for BS6 or BS7 emission norms and will be mated to a five-speed manual transmission. Maruti Suzuki stated that the Wagon R, based on the ethanol engine, will be up to 79% less polluting in comparison to the petrol version. Its performance will be more or less the same as that of the petrol counterpart.

What is flex fuel?

Flex fuel is an alternative fuel made from a mixture of petrol, methanol or ethanol. Flex-fuel engines are designed to run on more than one type of fuel at a time. Many changes are made to the engine and fuel system to accommodate the high blend of ethanol. Flex fuel is manufactured sustainably from sugar cane and corn, which is why it can also be called alcohol-based fuel.

Starch and sugar are fermented during the manufacturing process. Apart from this, ethanol engines are also much more economical than regular petrol. While the price of petrol in the Indian market is more than ₹ 100 thanks to the rising import costs, the price of ethanol will be between ₹ 60 to 70. It is also going to prove to be a boon for our farmers. Thanks to locally manufactured fuel, we will be much less dependent on other countries, and our import bills will also be reduced, eventually boosting the Indian economy.

Brazil has already shifted to Flex-fuel technology, with E-85 being the norm in the country, and as of 2021, more than 27 million Flex-fuel vehicles are on the United States roads.

The Future of flex-fuel in India?

Flex-Fuel

There is a bright future for flex-fuel in India. The rising cost and geopolitics have contributed to the rapid work in this field. Not only is the fuel cheaper in comparison to petrol, it is also environmentally friendly. As the economy grows further, India will see a massive rise in the number of cars with the economy’s growth in the coming decades. In comparison to EVs, flex-fuel is much more cost-effective to manufacture and own and is an immediate alternative to petrol, as has already been proved in Brazil. Apart from Maruti, other manufacturers will join the race as some time ago, Toyota Hilux was spotted testing internationally with flex-fuel technology.
